California surfer films relentless pursuit by great white shark
Experts said the shark was likely a great white, and the surfers said the foil may have looked like a stingray from below.
California surfer Ron Takeda recorded video of a great white shark following him for 10 minutes near Santa Barbara last month, trailing him for more than 1 mile during a hydrofoil surfing session.
Tavis Boise, who was paddleboarding nearby, said the pair likely sparked the shark's curiosity after gliding over it; experts note this year's El Nino weather pattern may be drawing more juvenile great white sharks to Southern California waters.
Boise described the encounter as "Relentless," watching as the shark, roughly 10 to 11 feet long, tailed his friend; during the pursuit, Boise shouted to Takeda, "Don't fall."
According to The Guardian, the pair shared their footage with experts at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, who agreed it was likely a great white shark and theorized the foil resembled a stingray.
Takeda later reflected that sharks are cool animals if treated with respect, while Southern California remains home to one of the largest populations of juvenile great white sharks in the region.
