California rolls out driver’s license with new design and security features
California's new driver licenses feature a digital security signature replacing the magnetic strip to enhance fraud protection, said DMV Director Steve Gordon.
- On Wednesday, Oct. 1, California started issuing driver’s licenses and identification cards featuring a redesigned look and enhanced security measures.
- This update follows previous security improvements made in 2010 and minor design changes in 2018 due to Real ID implementation.
- The new cards eliminate the magnetic stripe on the back and instead incorporate enhanced security by embedding a digital signature within one of the two barcodes, complemented by images showcasing California’s redwoods, poppies, and coastline.
- Steve Gordon, Director of the DMV, explained that the updated identification cards feature advanced security elements along with a design highlighting California's redwoods, poppies, and coastline, and emphasized that replacing existing licenses is unnecessary until they expire.
- The fees are unchanged at $45 for driver’s licenses and $39 for identification cards, and existing cards will continue to be accepted until their expiration dates.
