CHP Launches Statewide DUI Enforcement Surge Ahead Of Summer Weekend - Victor Valley News
CHP officers will run sobriety checkpoints and traffic enforcement statewide as officials cite more than 800 DUI deaths a year in California.
The California Highway Patrol will launch a statewide Maximum Enforcement Period from 6 p.m. Saturday, June 20, through 6 a.m. Sunday, June 21, targeting impaired driving.
Summer travel brings more motorists onto California's roadways, heightening the risk of DUI-related crashes as impaired driving remains a persistent public safety challenge.
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data shows impaired drivers are involved in about 30% of traffic fatalities nationwide, while California averages 34,000 impaired-driving crashes and more than 800 deaths annually.
All uniformed CHP personnel statewide will conduct traffic enforcement to maintain high visibility; the agency's October 2025 12-hour DUI-focused operation resulted in more than 500 arrests.
California Highway Patrol Commissioner Sean Duryee stated, "These tragedies are entirely preventable. Plan ahead, never drive impaired, and help us keep California's roads safe.
