California couple accused of killing son-in-law in public park have been charged with murder
Prosecutors say the killing followed a bitter custody fight and prior abuse allegations involving the couple’s three children.
On Saturday, 77-year-olds Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen shot their son-in-law, Jonathan McKinsey, in a Dublin parking lot, and authorities charged the couple with first-degree murder.
The marriage between McKinsey and wife Candice Jang had devolved into a bitter divorce and custody battle over their three children, marked by years of competing physical and emotional abuse allegations.
Witnesses alerted police to the shooting at the Dublin Sports Grounds, and officers arrested Zhang and Chen at the intersection of Dublin Boulevard and Civic Plaza within minutes.
Zhang and Chen are scheduled for arraignment on Wednesday morning in Dublin, and officials booked the couple into Santa Rita Jail, where they remain held without bail.
At the time of his death, McKinsey, a 40-year-old engineering director for The New York Times, was out on bail facing child abuse charges and seeking entry into a mental health diversion program.
