- A record-breaking winter heat wave in the Southwest is driving the extreme readings and will stretch into the weekend, with temperatures 20 to 30 degrees above normal for the rest of the week, Bryan Lewis said.
- Downtown Los Angeles recorded 94 degrees, surpassing its previous March high of 87 degrees in 1997, and Palm Springs, California reached 104 degrees, tying its March record from 1966.
- The aptly named Thermal, California was forecast to hit 110 degrees on Friday, many other cities in the Southwest are expected to see their earliest 100-plus degree day on record, and heat alerts extend through Sunday, March 22, 2026.
- Several cities on Wednesday experienced their hottest March day in almost 40 years, and Phoenix's only other March triple-digit reading was on March 26, 1988.
