Cal State faculty push to prevent AI tools from replacing them as schools and staff experiment
The measure would also bar employers from using AI alone to discipline or fire workers, and it passed a committee 10-0.
Senate Bill 947, backed by the California Faculty Association, may clear the Legislature as soon as Monday, preventing the California State University system from replacing faculty with generative AI.

Cal State renewed a $13 million annual ChatGPT contract for three years, while Kevin Wehr, a professor at Sacramento State, said the union is "trying to keep ahead of a rapidly changing set of technologies."
The Assembly voted 10-0 to pass the measure, though business groups including the California Chamber of Commerce and Lyft oppose the bill.
SB 947 is part of a broader California effort to curb AI in the workplace; Senate Bill 903 would ban psychotherapists from offering therapy through chatbots.
