Nigerian military helicopter carrying 32 passengers and crew members crashes, aviation minister says
A Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 crashed Monday in Igbokoda, Ondo State, during a routine mission from Benin to Lagos, carrying 32 people aboard. Wreckage was located near a naval base.
Air traffic controllers lost contact with the aircraft at 9:13 a.m., prompting Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo to report the disappearance. The Nigerian Air Force operates two ATR 42-500MP maritime patrol units registered as NAF 930 and NAF 931.
Preliminary information indicates 25 passengers and seven crew members were on board, according to Keyamo. The Nigerian Air Force activated immediate search and rescue operations in coordination with relevant authorities.
President Bola Tinubu expressed "profound sadness" over the incident, while Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke pledged full cooperation with the Ministry of Aviation. Emergency response teams continue operations at the site.
The crash represents one of Nigeria's worst recent military aviation accidents and is likely to intensify scrutiny of flight safety. Igbokoda, a major commercial hub for oil and gas logistics, remains the center of ongoing recovery and investigation efforts.
