C2C Forum Reinforces Relationship Between Simpcw First Nation and Local Municipalities
The forum focused on Aboriginal Title, tourism and emergency planning as Simpcw and municipal leaders discussed shared concerns and joint advocacy.
- On April 8 and 9, Simpcw First Nation hosted a Community to Community forum in Valemount, convening municipal leaders from the North Thompson and Robson valleys for regional collaboration discussions.
- These meetings stem from established memorandums of understanding with Valemount, Barriere, and Clearwater. Simpcw Kúkwpi7 George Lampreau said the MOUs define how nations and municipalities support each other on regional issues.
- Lampreau emphasized that "true reconciliation is about" on-the-ground politics with municipalities, clarifying that "we don't have any interest or intention of taking people's private property" despite recent court concerns.
- Following the forum, Clearwater Mayor Merlin Blackwell and TNRD director Usoff Tsao expressed optimism about the partnership, which strengthens municipal and Simpcw advocacy for provincial support on shared needs like healthcare staffing.
- The group is focusing on economic diversification through two Indigenous circle routes for tourism, while Lampreau plans future town halls to address public concerns and continue relationship building across Simpcw territory.
