Canadian Newsrooms Confront AI Personas Repurposing Stories Across 100 Cities
AI-generated bylines have repurposed reporting from more than 100 Canadian cities, and some sites appear to have been delisted or downranked by Google.
On Saturday, Google delisted We News, a site using AI-generated personas including editor-in-chief Gordon Halloway to repurpose news across more than 100 Canadian cities.
Policy Options editor-in-chief Les Perreaux exposed the "Daniel Robson" case in late September after a Turkish editor confirmed the contributor was not a real person.
Simon Fraser University professor Ahmed Al-Rawi said sites exploit real journalism to monetize content, though Perreaux argued AI acts as an "accelerant" for human deception rather than the primary cause.
Minister Evan Solomon's office stated "Canadians deserve to know when the information they consume has been generated or altered by AI," while News Media Canada president Deegan warned that legal action against foreign sites remains expensive.
Western University assistant professor of journalism Chris Arsenault questioned whether Big Tech should act as "arbiters of truth," noting cheap AI models make effective regulation extremely difficult.
