BYD will eventually need three assembly plants, one battery factory in Europe, adviser says
The company is scouting existing plants to speed production and limit costs as EU local-content rules are expected next year.
- On Wednesday, BYD special adviser for Europe Alfredo Altavilla announced the automaker will need three vehicle assembly plants and one battery factory in Europe to pursue growth plans and comply with European Union regulations.
- The company plans to acquire and refurbish existing facilities rather than building from scratch, with Altavilla identifying Spain and France as the "most actionable" options due to their "decidedly simpler situations."
- Currently initiating production at its first European plant in Hungary, BYD is simultaneously scouting other factories across Europe, with Altavilla noting, "We have a very large team that keeps conducting feasibility studies."
- Italy remains a "plan B" for the automaker, but Altavilla explained that Stellantis, the country's sole major automaker, is unwilling to sell any plants. "I cannot buy something that is not for sale," he said.
- Manufacturers are rushing to localize production within the European Union ahead of new 'Made in Europe' rules, which will establish minimum local content requirements for electric vehicles sold throughout the bloc.
