39th-Ranked Treesa Jolly, Gayatri Gopichand Stun 7th-Seeded Japanese Pair at World Badminton Championships
The unseeded Indian pair won 21-16, 21-12 and moved one match from a medal after Treesa Jolly returned from an ankle injury.
On Thursday, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand advanced to the BWF World Championships quarter-finals in New Delhi, defeating Japan's seventh seeds Rin Iwanaga and Kie Nakanishi 21-16, 21-12.
After recovering from an ankle injury sustained earlier this year, Treesa and Gayatri regained competitive rhythm by winning the Philippine International Challenge this month before reaching the quarter-finals.
Treesa's jump-smashes repeatedly pressured the Japanese defense, while Gayatri's front-court work created openings; the 39th-ranked Indians controlled the Round of 16 tie from the outset.
Next, Jolly and Gopichand will face China's Jia Yi Fan and Zhang Shu Xian in the quarter-finals, with victory putting them one match away from a medal.
A win would make them only the second Indian women's doubles team to medal at the World Championships; Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa achieved this feat in 2011.
