Bungie Releases Marathon Roadmap, Detailing New Game Modes and More
Bungie will add a permanent PvE mode, Team Deathmatch and a new shell as it tries to broaden Marathon beyond extraction play.
On Thursday, September 24, 2026, Bungie detailed a roadmap for Marathon, shifting the extraction shooter toward a broader, multi-mode experience designed to reach players beyond its initial, divisive gameplay loop.
Senior Marathon design lead Kevin Yanes acknowledged the game's "constant loop of failure" failed to connect with a broad audience, prompting the studio to limit friction for new players through varied gameplay types.
December's Symbiosis update introduces the Bishop shell, a "high-performance robot samurai," alongside Marathon's first permanent PvE mode and an expanded Perimeter zone featuring a boss fight against a large alien Tick Queen.
A "meaningfully larger" update arrives in March 2027, featuring an "interconnected system of permanent PvE, PvP, and PvEvP experiences," new alien combatants, and deeper shell progression to sustain long-term growth.
Developer Poria Torkan stated that Bungie is "absolutely not done with Destiny," pledging to continue evolving both franchises throughout and beyond 2027 despite recent staffing adjustments and scrutiny.
