EU clears 3 billion euros for Ukraine after Kyiv passes reforms
The agreement comes hours after a meeting between European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and President Volodymyr Zelensky, in which the former reminded that Ukraine unlock 37 billion euros ($42 billion) by carrying out previously-agreed reforms.
On Thursday, September 24, during the EU Competitiveness Council meeting, the allocation of EUR 3 billion to Ukraine under the Ukraine Facility will be approved.
Ukraine urgently needs billions of euros to cover its budget deficit, but Brussels is demanding reforms, anti-corruption measures, and tax changes. Ursula von der Leyen's meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky in New York was a tense one.
The EU keeps the financial tap open, but demands more tax revenues, less shadow economy and legislative advances from Kiev while Zelenski claims Patriot defenses before winter.
