Browns Owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam Donate $12.5 Million Toward Blood Cancer Research and Treatment
The gift splits $10 million for research in England and $2.5 million for a Cleveland cancer center to advance CLL treatment and care.
On Wednesday, Cleveland Browns owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam announced a $12.5 million donation to fund research and drug development for chronic lymphocytic leukemia and other rare blood cancers.
Dee Haslam, who was diagnosed with CLL five years ago, stated, "I am extremely grateful that I am living a full, healthy life after being diagnosed with CLL in 2021." The personal experience motivated the investment.
The donation allocates $10 million to the Oxford-Harrington Rare Disease Centre in England for drug development, while the remaining $2.5 million establishes an endowed chair and innovation fund at University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center.
Former U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron, chair of the Oxford-Harrington advisory council, said, "Rare diseases represent one of the greatest areas of unmet medical need worldwide," emphasizing international collaboration's importance.
This contribution builds on a 2023 $20 million leadership commitment by the Haslams to University Hospitals, which funded the UH Haslam Sports Innovation Center to improve athlete performance and healing.
