South Africa Coach Broos Picks 17 Local Stars for AFCON
Coach Hugo Broos included two 20-year-olds mainly for experience while relying on 23 players to compete; three others named as standbys for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
- Broos revealed on Monday his final 25-man squad for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, whittled from an initial 28 players, on SABC Sport.
- To build future depth, Broos included 20-year-olds Tylon Smith and Shandre Campbell mainly for AFCON experience, not expected to play.
- Broos stressed he trusts 23 of the 25 players to perform fully and credited his strong player pool with qualifying for the 2025 AFCON and 2026 Fifa World Cup.
- Selection fallout included omissions of Themba Zwane and Thapelo Morena for lack of game time, while Iqraam Rayners was one of three players named on standby with Mduduzi Shabalala and Thabo Moloisane.
- Looking ahead, Bafana will face Angola on December 22, Egypt on December 26, and Zimbabwe on December 29 as camp begins early next week after Broos attends the USA World Cup draw.
