British skydiver survives 11,000ft fall after parachute failure

Mitchell Deakin survived serious injuries after both parachutes failed to open during a tandem skydive, with the instructor’s reserve chute blocking the main one, officials said.

  • On September 17, Mitchell Deakin, 24, survived an 11,000-foot fall during a tandem skydiving jump over Nevada, both he and instructor Jiron Arcos Ponce surviving the crash.
  • A fault with the reserve parachute blocked the main parachute from opening fully, causing Jiron Arcos Ponce, the instructor, and the student to spin uncontrollably and hit the ground at 35-45 mph.
  • Doctors inserted metal plates in pelvis and drained fluid from Mitchell Deakin's lung after surgery at University Medical Center Trauma, Las Vegas; chest drains were removed and physio got him walking with a frame.
  • Initial police paperwork named GoJump Las Vegas, a claim the firm denied, while Sin City Skydiving said the instructor worked there; the FAA, LVMPD, and USPA are investigating the September 17 incident.
  • Mitch's partner, Isabel Clacher, launched a GoFundMe that has raised 16k so far to cover medical bills, transport and accommodation during his US recovery.
