Brit Couple’s Nightmare as They Face 30 Years in Turkish Prison
The pair were moved to jail and could wait up to a year for trial, while relatives raised about £455 for legal fees.
On April 26, Turkish authorities detained British nationals Holly Cooper and Taylor Johnson, both 20, in Istanbul while traveling from Thailand to London with two suitcases allegedly containing cannabis.
The NCA's Borders Threat Team previously warned criminal gangs lure travelers with 'luxe holidays' to transport 'packages', while family friends claimed the couple were 'recruited and groomed by bigger criminals'.
If convicted, the pair face 10 to 30 years in prison; they have since been moved to a second jail following reports that Johnson was assaulted in an overcrowded holding cell.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office confirmed it is providing support to the detained nationals and their families, though with only state-appointed lawyers they may wait up to a year for trial.
A family friend's GoFundMe campaign raised around £455 before being removed on Tuesday, as relatives described the pair as 'good kids' who 'did something stupid' while facing the legal process.
