'Bring them back': Students help restore Atlantic salmon population in Lake Ontario
The Lake Ontario Atlantic Salmon Restoration Program involves more than 80 classrooms, with students caring for eggs for five months before release.
- In late May, Grade 6 students from Sunderland Public School, led by teacher Pam Freitag, released 93 Atlantic salmon into Duffins Creek in Ajax, Ont., concluding their five-month classroom restoration project.
- The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters Foundation co-ordinates the Lake Ontario Atlantic Salmon Restoration Program, which places eggs in more than 80 classrooms annually to restore the species following its local extinction in the late 1800s.
- For five months, Freitag's class cared for more than 100 eggs in a water tank, monitoring oxygen and temperature daily while students kept logs and alerted officials when a filter malfunctioned.
- Students Emma Mitchell and Eric Batpie personally released the fish, with Mitchell stating, "In danger, so I want to help bring them back," describing the experience as meaningful support for nature.
- Funded by Crown corporation Ontario Power Generation, the initiative teaches children to be "good stewards" of the environment while fostering empathy and understanding of life's value, Freitag noted.
