Nigeria: Tinubu Appoints Ex-Dangote Executive As NMDPRA Chief
The presidency said the move aims to strengthen regulation in the petroleum sector as Nigeria faces rising fuel costs and pressure on energy security.
On Wednesday, President Bola Tinubu removed Saidu Mohammed as Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, nominating Rabiu Abdullahi Umar, a former Dangote Group executive, to replace him pending Senate confirmation.
Citing the Petroleum Industry Act 2021, the Presidency stated the removal strengthens sector regulation. Mohammed served only four months, succeeding Farouk Ahmed, who resigned following a public feud with Aliko Dangote over petroleum import licenses.
Umar, an alumnus of Harvard Business School with an Accounting degree from Bayero University, brings more than 25 years of experience across energy and infrastructure sectors. He previously served as Group Sales and Marketing Director at Dangote Cement Plc.
Mohammed was reportedly removed while leading a delegation to the Pipeline Technology Conference in Berlin, Germany, held from 27 to 30 April. Until the Senate confirms Umar, the most senior official will act as agency head.
This leadership change occurs as the federal government intensifies oil and gas sector reforms amid rising fuel costs and global market volatility. The Dangote Refinery remains central to Nigeria's energy security strategy going forward.
