BREAKING: Court sentences mother, sister of late terrorist kingpin Battujo to 40 years in prison
The judge ordered rehabilitation after the women admitted helping the bandit kingpin and hiding information about his activities and firearms.
- On Friday, the Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced Safiya Salihu and Halima Abdullahi to 20 years imprisonment each after both women pleaded guilty to terrorism-related charges involving their relative, the late terrorist kingpin Kachallah Ibrahim Battujo.
- The convictions follow the June 10 death of Battujo, who was eliminated by Nigerian security forces during an operation near Iluke in Kogi State after intelligence linked his group to attacks on local schools.
- Justice Hauwa Joseph Yilwa imposed the 20-year concurrent sentences after the women admitted to three of five charges, including that they "aided and abetted the activities of Battujo" through telephone conversations.
- Defendants escaped conviction on two counts involving financial proceeds and Hajj sponsorship, though the judge further ordered both convicts undergo rehabilitation after completing their prison terms.
- The Office of the Attorney General of the Federation prosecuted the case under the Terrorism Act, 2022, while Director of Public Prosecutions Oyedepo Rotimi requested the court strike the dismissed counts.
