The general consolidated budget deficit reached 59.42 billion lei in the period January-August 2026, 26.94 billion lei less than in the same period last year, according to data transmitted by the Ministry of Finance. As a share of GDP, the deficit dropped from 4.51% to 2.89%. Minister Alexandru Nazare warns, however, that a prudent approach to public spending is necessary.

Ministry of Finance: After the first seven months of the year, the budget deficit stood at 2.34% of GDP, under conditions where the target for the whole year is 6.2% of GDP.
Romania's budget deficit fell in the first eight months of the year, but the state is paying more and more for public debt interest. Interest expenditures exceeded 42 billion lei, nearly 27% higher than in the same period of 2025.
