Brazilian police rescue 108 Cuban migrants at the northern border and arrest 5 alleged smugglers

Brazilian police rescued 108 migrants from human traffickers on Monday near the Guyana border, arresting five suspects in Roraima state. Authorities transferred the group into custody for immigration regularization and referral to social services.
Escalating economic crisis and United States sanctions are driving more citizens to flee Cuba. Consequently, migration to the country has surged since 2022, with those groups now representing the leading nationality seeking refugee status.
Northern Amazon states Amapa account for nearly 60% of residences. Authorities report they have rescued 297 individuals attempting to enter illegally since June 2024.
Smugglers, known as "coyotes," subjected victims to exhausting journeys in poorly maintained vehicles. Officials noted that these illegal routes ignore all standards of road safety and human dignity.
Facing more than 40,000 refugee applications in 2025, the Ministry of Justice stated flows could increase if geopolitical tensions worsen. Officials suggested regularization through refugee status recognition remains a potential alternative.
