Athletics Acquire Catcher Jonah Heim From Braves for Cash
Sean Murphy returns from the injured list after right hip surgery, and the Braves send Jonah Heim to the Athletics for cash.
On Monday, the Atlanta Braves activated catcher Sean Murphy from the injured list following his recovery from hip surgery, designating Jonah Heim for assignment in a corresponding roster move.
Atlanta signed Heim to a one-year, $1.5 million contract in February to fill the void while Murphy recovered from right hip surgery; he batted.231 with one home run and 8 RBIs in 12 games.
Rookie Drake Baldwin, the 2025 NL Rookie of the Year, is batting.315 with eight homers and 29 RBIs, helping the NL East-leading Braves maintain the best record in the majors at 25-10.
The Athletics acquired Heim from Atlanta for cash considerations on Monday night, removing him from the 40-man roster and giving the organization seven days to trade or waive the 30-year-old catcher.
While some fans expressed frustration with the roster decision, one supporter noted that carrying three catchers could be justified while Baldwin and Murphy platoon to maintain the team's hot start.
