Brain activity study reveals five distinct profiles for depression
Researchers linked the five subtypes to different symptom patterns, including severe substance abuse and post-traumatic stress disorder, in 263 patients.
As two people with considerably different symptoms may receive the same depression diagnosis, researchers wanted to determine whether this individuality also manifests in brain activity.
The same depression diagnosis can even hide opposing changes in brain function. Researchers hope that brain measurements will help patients find the right treatment more quickly in the future.
