Bolivia detains attorney general, government ministry says

Officials seized $300,000 in cash and arrested 14 people, including the Attorney General, for allegedly operating a criminal network that facilitated drug trafficking, the Interior Ministry said.

  • On Thursday, Bolivian police arrested Bolivian Attorney General Roger Mariaca and 13 others accused of protecting drug traffickers, days after the Trump administration imposed visa restrictions on the attorney general over corruption allegations.
  • President Rodrigo Paz took office last November, ending nearly two decades of Movement Toward Socialism party dominance under former President Evo Morales, and has since deepened security cooperation with Washington.
  • Interior Minister Marco Antonio Oviedo alleged authorities found 3.53 million bolivianos and $10,000 in an ambulance leaving Mariaca's Santa Cruz home, claiming the attorney general had protected Uruguayan drug kingpin Sebasti Marset in 2023.
  • Secretary State Marco Rubio hailed the arrests as "bold and decisive actions" to combat corruption, citing The State Department's Shield of the Americas alliance supporting conservative governments fighting organized crime.
  • Two other prosecutors targeted by this week's broader U.S. visa sanctions were also detained, as Washington continues using travel bans to pressure officials across South America whose actions conflict with its priorities.
