GE Aerospace Says GE9X Mid-Seal Issue Won’t Delay Boeing 777X Entry Into Service
Boeing said engine durability work with GE could delay 777X certification, while a Renton wing shop shortfall may slow 737 MAX production increases.
On Wednesday, Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg stated 777X certification could extend into 2027 as the company works through engine durability issues with GE that prevent the aircraft from meeting ETOPS requirements for ocean flights.
Both 777X certification and increased MAX production are central to Boeing's recovery from the 2024 midair panel blowout, which prompted the FAA to cap monthly MAX production at 38 planes.
Boeing is stabilizing MAX production at 47 planes monthly, but Ortberg noted the Renton wing shop is "constrained," slowing the planned increase to 52 planes; the company has "plans in place to address that."
Union members are set to vote next week on a contract offer from the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace, with Ortberg warning that a strike would halt 777X certification.
Ortberg does not expect further major charges after taking a $280 million charge on the Air Force One program last quarter, while the FAA recently expanded Boeing's self-certification authority for plane safety.
