Body Found in Providence River
Police said the body has not been identified and inquiries remain early as searches for the 24-year-old monk end.
On Wednesday, May 6, 2026, Police Scotland recovered a man's body from the water near the Orkney island of Stronsay, with the family of Justin Evans, a 24-year-old monk reported missing last month, informed of the discovery.
Evans, known as Brother Ignatius, vanished from the Golgotha Monastery on the private island of Papa Stronsay shortly before midnight on April 11 and was a member of the Redemptorist Community.
Bishop Hugh Gilbert of the Diocese of Aberdeen expressed "deep sadness" regarding the "disappearance and presumed death" of the New Zealand native, while Father Michael Mary called the situation "utterly tragic."
Investigations into the death are ongoing, with Police Scotland treating the case as "unexplained," and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal following formal identification.
The Kirkwall Coastguard Rescue Team and an RNLI lifeboat assisted during the discovery reported at 7.35am on Wednesday, after which local police and coastguard services officially called off their searches.
