Boat with around 270 people on board capsizes off North Cyprus, media says
- On Sunday, a ferry carrying nearly 270 passengers and crew capsized off the coast of Kyrenia, Northern Cyprus, killing at least seven people. Northern Cyprus Prime Minister Unal Ustel reported 237 survivors rescued, with 24 still missing.
- The privately owned vessel departed Kyrenia port at 12:30pm Sunday and began taking on water 15 minutes later. Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman noted that while Saturday brought fierce storms, Sunday's weather was considered suitable for travel.
- Survivor Efe Multici told CNN Turk the ferry shook violently before leaping high and crashing down, bursting the front left side. The vessel sank to a depth of 514 metres, settling on the seabed by late afternoon.
- Turkish Cypriot authorities detained the captain and seven crew members for questioning. President Tayyip Erdogan extended condolences to affected families, saying, "Efforts to reach those who are still missing continue uninterrupted."
- Divers are assisting in the search, though Erhurman warned that "reaching them does not appear easy at the moment." The region remains split along Greek and Turkish Cypriot lines since Turkey's 1974 invasion.
