The Ministry of Health in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern warns against contact with blue algae in the Baltic Sea as well as in rivers and lakes. Bathers are advised to avoid areas with visible algae accumulations. Coasts and waters in Schleswig-Holstein are also affected.
Blue algae spread on the North and Baltic Seas as well as in numerous lakes. The bacteria can form toxins and cause skin irritation as well as nausea.
On many Baltic coasts and lakes in the north authorities advise against bathing. The reason: bacterial carpets, which can lead to a bluish-green turbidity of the water and trigger allergic reactions.
Holidaymakers at Baltic Sea beaches and bathing lakes have to be particularly careful at the moment: Large blue algae carpets are spreading, individual waters have already been closed.
Satellite images show large algae carpets off the Mecklenburg coast. The Ministry of Health of Schwerin advises to avoid areas with visible algae.
The summer weather offers ideal conditions for blue algae in the Baltic Sea and bathing lakes in northern Germany. The so-called cyanobacteria can cause nausea and skin irritation. A simple rule of thumb helps bathers to assess the risk on site.
