Shark Tears Away Part of Florida Man's Foot Near Key West as Friends Race Him to Shore
Doctors saved his foot after he lost about six liters of blood and underwent two emergency surgeries, his friends and bystanders said.
- David Daniel, a resident of Silver Springs, Fla., survived a shark attack near Boca Grande Key while exploring a sandbar during a fishing trip. The shark tore away a portion of his leg.
- "It was a normal day," Daniel said, until a friend spotted the shark. As the animal swam directly toward him, Daniel lifted his leg, but the shark bit him, tearing away a portion of his leg.
- Friends rushed him to shore, where two bystanders who were nurses provided emergency care as he lost blood. Doctors performed two surgeries and managed to save his foot, despite him losing about six liters of blood.
- Daniel returned home to Silver Springs on Saturday to begin recovery. He must wear a medical boot and will have limited mobility for six weeks as he heals.
- Facing a slew of pricey medical bills as an uninsured patient, Daniel is receiving support through a GoFundMe page created to help with the unexpected financial burden.
