Black Montreal police employees told management some are worried about going to work
The letter says employees fear reprisals and urges stronger whistleblower protections as 16 officers remain under investigation for alleged racist conduct.
Black Montreal police employees sent an internal letter to deputy director Marc Charbonneau on June 14, stating some staff fear reprisals and are reluctant to work following racism allegations at Station 39.
Sixteen officers at Station 39, Montréal-Nord are under investigation for alleged racism and hateful acts toward Black and Arab people, including reports they cut the hair of racialized citizens as 'trophies.'
The committee wrote that current whistleblower reporting mechanisms are insufficient, urging leadership to strengthen existing protocols so employees can speak without fearing personal or professional consequences.
Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada is aware of the letter and will organize a meeting as soon as possible, while police officials said they would address questions by Friday.
Hundreds of residents rallied outside Station 39 on Monday, joining civil rights groups calling for an independent inquiry into the department's pattern of alleged misconduct and racism.
