Black Hills drilling project canceled after backlash from tribes
The company said it will not file another plan after tribes and environmental groups sued and a judge halted drilling at the sacred site.
A South Dakota mining company canceled a drilling project in the Black Hills after opposition from Native American tribes and local groups due to its proximity to the sacred site of Pe'Sla.
Nine tribes filed a lawsuit against the Forest Service alleging violations of environmental laws for granting permits without proper review, and environmental groups obtained a temporary restraining order against the project.
The Black Hills is considered unceded territory by Sioux tribes who maintain their claim to the land despite a Supreme Court ruling that they were owed compensation for its seizure after the discovery of gold.
