Biotech jobs boost for Grangemouth site

Funding from UK and Scottish governments will create up to 460 biotech jobs at Grangemouth, supporting a low-carbon industrial transition and new green technology investment.

  • On Thursday, MiAlgae broke ground at Grangemouth to build its first commercial plant producing fish-free Omega 3 from whisky by-products, backed by £53 million.
  • Earlier this year the Grangemouth refinery closed, costing about 400 jobs, and following last month’s Budget Chancellor Rachel Reeves allocated £14.5 million from the UK Government for the Grangemouth Just Transition Fund.
  • The development is forecast to deliver £53 million into the Scottish economy, creating 130 direct full-time jobs at Grangemouth and supporting 180 further posts across Scotland.
  • Eligible Grangemouth workers will be prioritised in hiring with a job interview guarantee, and Scottish Enterprise will receive £600,000 funding for site planning and infrastructure.
  • Combined projects on the site could create up to 460 roles in the coming years, with Celtic Renewables adding 149 jobs after a £6.23 million allocation, ministers said.
