Bill Maher Criticizes Sen. Rand Paul Over Release of Anthony Fauci’s Pandemic Diary
Maher said Paul broke with his privacy brand by publishing more than 1,000 pages of Fauci’s diary and pushing contempt proceedings.
On Friday, comedian Bill Maher criticized Sen. Rand Paul for releasing more than 1,000 pages of Dr. Anthony Fauci's private diary, arguing the move betrayed Paul's libertarian brand focused on privacy.
Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. confirmed the diary entries were stored on a government computer and provided them to Paul as part of an investigation into Fauci's pandemic response.
The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, led by Paul, voted 8-5 last week to refer Fauci for contempt after he invoked his Fifth Amendment rights 111 times during the hearing.
Maher remarked that while Fauci made mistakes, he was "very, very far away" from being a criminal, signaling discomfort with Paul's aggressive oversight methods among critics of the administration.
Legal expert Mudd noted that a public official's notes on a government computer "aren't a private citizen's journal," highlighting the distinction between official records and personal privacy in the debate.
