Bill Ackman and His Wife Neri Oxman Commit $400 Million for Brain Research Institute
The nonprofit will use a 10 million-share transfer and an internal venture arm to speed treatments for neurological injuries and brain disease.
- Billionaire Bill Ackman and Neri Oxman are committing approximately $400 million to establish the Ackman Oxman Institute , a nonprofit center in Manhattan dedicated to brain research, medical rehabilitation, and human longevity.
- The initiative follows a family crisis earlier this year when Ackman's 26-year-old daughter, Lucy, suffered a massive brain hemorrhage. Seeking a system to turn clinical breakthroughs into treatments, Ackman pledged to "invest unlimited resources to restore her to life."
- To provide long-term funding, Ackman transferred 10 million shares of Pershing Square Capital Management to the institute. The campus will occupy a 3.4-acre footprint on Manhattan's West Side, encompassing roughly 680,000 square feet across multiple buildings.
- Rather than focusing on traditional academic publishing, the nonprofit will operate with a commercial orientation to accelerate medical tools. Its advisory board includes Nobel laureate James Rothman and neurosurgeon Chris Kellner, who directed Lucy's care team.
- The family plans to contribute another gift of similar magnitude to cover early operational expenses. While remaining separate from higher education, the organization plans to collaborate non-exclusively with major hospital systems, including Mount Sinai.
