Bihar Reeling Under Flood as over 16 Lakh People Affected; CM Conducts Aerial Survey
Officials said 16.85 lakh people in 11 districts were affected as 27 State Disaster Response Force teams and seven National Disaster Response Force teams were deployed.
- On Saturday, Bihar faced severe flooding as over 16 lakh people across 11 districts were affected by swollen rivers, including the Ganga and Punpun, which inundated rural Patna and disrupted transport.
- Heavy rainfall measured 69 per cent above normal for September, combined with disaster conditions in Nepal, caused the Ganga to rise 10 cm and cross the "highest flood level " at Gandhi Ghat.
- In Patna, one of the worst-affected districts with 2.32 lakh people hit, the East Central Railway cancelled trains due to "high water level at Bridge number 21" connecting Punpun and Parsa Bazar.
- To support those affected, officials deployed 27 SDRF teams and seven NDRF teams while operating 1,158 boats and 80 community kitchens, distributing around 45,900 polythene sheets and 11,700 dry-ration packets.
- Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary reviewed operations in Bhagalpur, while BJP national president Nitin Nabin instructed officials to ensure "no laxity in relief and rescue operations" and adequate supplies for affected residents.

The Ganges River in Bihar is steadily rising and is expected to rise further between September 5th and 8th. Extremely severe flooding is currently underway in Gandhighat and Pandarak in Patna. Six districts are at risk of severe flooding. The rising pressure of the Ganges is creating a backwater effect in the Son, Punpun, Gandak, and Kosi rivers, which could exacerbate flooding and drainage problems in low-lying areas.
