Former Sask. NDP MLA Says Party’s Approach to Opposing Involuntary Treatment Was Reason for Departure
The Saskatoon-Centre MLA said she no longer supports Carla Beck’s leadership and will become the legislature’s sole independent member.
On Tuesday, Saskatoon-Centre MLA Betty Nippi-Albright announced she is leaving the Saskatchewan NDP to sit as an Independent, saying she can "no longer support the direction of Carla Beck's leadership."
Nippi-Albright wrote that she "has not felt the support or respect required to carry out this work in a good way," adding that many issues she raised "did not receive attention until recently."
As the only "First Nation Female, sitting MLA in Saskatchewan," the legislator stated her academic training and lived experience provided a unique perspective not adequately represented within the party.
Following the resignation, the Saskatchewan NDP's seat count fell to 26, while the governing Saskatchewan Party maintains its 34-seat majority in the legislature.
Serving as an Independent, Nippi-Albright intends to continue advocating for constituents in Saskatoon-Centre, as well as for "Inherent and Treaty Rights holders" and others whose voices are often overlooked.
