Trump admin won’t give AI leaders a ‘liability shield,’ Bessent tells CNBC
Scott Bessent said the administration will not protect AI companies from lawsuits as officials weigh shared risks with China.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is scheduled for a CNBC 'Squawk Box' interview on Monday. He will address administration concerns regarding rising fuel prices, interest rates, and risks from artificial intelligence.
Bessent met with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng on Sunday. The officials discussed issues including trade and shared artificial intelligence risks, a diplomatic engagement ahead of the Washington summit between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Jinping.
The Federal Reserve raised benchmark interest rates to a 3.75% to 4% range on Sept. 16. Meanwhile, benchmark 10-year Treasury yields have increased by about 100 basis points since Iran, rising above 5% last week for the first time since 2007.
President Donald Trump repeatedly demanded that the Fed cut rates. The president spoke with Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh before the Federal Open Market Committee meeting, advising Warsh, "You might as well vote with the board."
Concerns about fuel affordability and inflation persist ahead of the election. Trump vowed on Sept. 9 that every citizen adult would receive a "$5,000" dividend if Republicans retain control of the Senate and House.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that AI developers must be held accountable for the results and that the federal government will not provide them with a legal shield. Bessent also stated that the U.S. and China will meet in two months for talks on artificial intelligence.
AI leaders “need to take responsibility” instead of expecting the federal government to provide them with a “shield of protection,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant said.
