Alexander Zverev beats Ben Shelton in 4 sets to win US Open
On Sunday, men's top seed Alexander Zverev defeated No. 8 seed Ben Shelton 6-3, 7-6 , 5-7, 6-2 at Arthur Ashe Stadium, securing his first U.S. Open title and second Grand Slam championship of 2026.
Following his French Open victory earlier this year, Zverev's triumph maintains the American men's Grand Slam drought, which has lasted since Andy Roddick won in 2003.
The four-set match lasted three hours and 33 minutes, but Zverev initially did not realize he had won. He told ATPTour.com, "It was just relief, joy, everything together" after seeing his team celebrate.
Shelton aimed to become the first Black man to win the tournament since Arthur Ashe in 1968. Fans traveled from near and far hoping to witness the American make history on the Arthur Ashe court.
While Zverev celebrated, he faced domestic abuse allegations in a 2024 Berlin court case involving Brenda Patea. The case was officially declared "no verdict," and Zverev made no admission of guilt.
Second Grand Slam title within a few months: Alexander Zverev triumphs in the US Open final against Ben Shelton. Only briefly did the favourite have difficulties.
Six years ago, Alexander Zverev lost a 2-0 lead in the US Open final. He didn't do that this year. The German won 3-1 in sets against American Ben Shelton.
