Belgium Coach Offers No Guarantees to Lukaku Before Turkey Clash
Belgium coach Mark van Bommel declined to guarantee playing time for 33-year-old Romelu Lukaku against Turkey on Friday, citing tactical flexibility over automatic starts for his top scorer.
Van Bommel cited Lukaku's restricted minutes at Fenerbahce as a disadvantage, stating, "The only disadvantage is that he hasn't played much for Fenerbahce." This constraint influenced recent team selection.
Despite his 93-goal Belgium record, Lukaku played only seven minutes during last week's win over Italy and remained on the bench during Monday's loss to France, raising questions about his international future.
Belgium will also manage 22-year-old Chelsea midfielder Romeo Lavia's workload due to injury concerns. Van Bommel said, "You can already assume that I won't start him."
Van Bommel dismissed speculation about his selections, telling reporters in Liege, "It is absolutely not the case that Romelu cannot come on or start. Quite the opposite.
Poland remains third in group B4, now with 4 points, approaching Bosnia-Herzegovina (2nd, 5th) and the leader Sweden (1st, 7th), who tied 1-1 to each other.
The Red Devils did what they had to do. Belgium beat Turkey 3-0 at Sclessin. Kevin De Bruyne was the standout player with two gems. Substitute Romelu Lukaku also got his goal. Relive the match below and reread all the reactions!
