Popular Musical Suddenly Axed, All Perth Shows Cancelled
The producers cited unsustainable touring costs and said ticket holders in cancelled cities will receive refunds or exchanges.
The Michael Cassel Group announced on Friday that Beetlejuice The Musical will end its Australian tour early, cancelling planned runs in Sydney, Adelaide, and Perth while cutting the Brisbane season short.
Rising logistical costs of touring vast distances between Australian cities and a cautious consumer environment made the large-scale production unsustainable, the producer said.
The final performance will occur on July 5 in Brisbane, according to the producer. Broadway star Andy Karl, who plays the lead role, thanked audiences on social media.
Calling the cancellation "devastating," the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance highlighted the precarious nature of creative work and called for stronger government support for the industry.
This cancellation follows the early closure of Back to the Future: The Musical in January, reflecting a recent trend of shorter Australian theatrical runs due to high costs and economic pressure.
