Bedford Train Passenger Speaks Out After Horrific Crash
East Midlands Railway service suspended after the crash, as emergency crews treated 11 people with very serious injuries and 22 with serious injuries, officials said.
On Friday, a train driver died and 33 passengers suffered serious injuries when two East Midlands Railway services collided near Bedford shortly after 5 p.m. near the Elstow interchange.
The collision involved a class 360 train and a class 810 service, both headed to London. While EMR introduced the class 810s last year, the class 360 units are at least 20 years old.
Passenger Pete Knapp described people "crying and screaming" after the impact, noting he saw travelers with "life-threatening, major injuries." Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer called the incident "hugely concerning."
Eddie Dempsey, general secretary of the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers , confirmed the deceased was a driver and former union representative. EMR trains between Bedford and London remain suspended until at least Monday.
The Rail Accident Investigation Branch has deployed inspectors to gather evidence at the scene. This tragedy follows a fatal collision in Wales in October 2024, which was Britain's first fatal multi-train crash in over a quarter of a century.
