Bears Still Mum on Whether Tyson Bagent or Case Keenum Will Start at QB vs. Jets
Coach Ben Johnson has not announced the starter, and Tyson Bagent may get his first start since 2023 after Case Keenum threw for 247 yards and 2 touchdowns last week.
- The Chicago Bears have not revealed whether Tyson Bagent or Case Keenum will start against the New York Jets on Sunday, as head coach Ben Johnson intentionally keeps the quarterback decision secret while starting quarterback Caleb Williams remains sidelined.
- Case Keenum led the Bears to a 27-7 win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday with 247 yards and two touchdowns, while Tyson Bagent has taken the majority of first-team practice repetitions this week after clearing concussion protocol.
- Offensive coordinator Press Taylor said on Thursday that Bagent is "a guy where you never have to worry about his mindset" despite multiple injuries last month. Keenum stated "I've been making my case for 15 years" and does not feel pressured to justify his eligibility.
- Johnson aims to keep Jets defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn guessing by employing the same element of surprise he used against Philadelphia in Week 3, while the Bears organization views Bagent as the superior physical talent between the two backups.
- Starting quarterback Williams is recovering from a Grade 2 hamstring strain and has yet to practice, making his absence for the Jets game virtually certain and potentially extending the backup quarterback competition beyond this week.
