B.C. Sees 28 per Cent Drop in Toxic Drug Deaths in April Compared to Previous Year
The lowest April toll since before the pandemic came as year-to-date deaths fell 16% and fluorofentanyl appeared in 67% of tested cases.
- On Thursday, the B.C. Coroners Service reported 119 suspected toxic-drug deaths in British Columbia in April, down 32 per cent from 174 deaths in April 2025.
- Year-to-Date fatalities reached 522 in the first four months of 2026, reflecting a 16 per cent drop from last year and more than 41 per cent lower than the 2023 peak when deaths peaked in British Columbia.
- Men accounted for about 76 per cent of deaths, with most victims aged 30 to 59, while Fluorofentanyl was detected in 67 per cent of those who underwent expedited testing.
- Smoking remains the primary consumption method at 70 per cent, and 81 per cent of fatalities occurred indoors in private residences, supportive housing and shelters rather than outside.
- As British Columbia marks 10 years since declaring a public health emergency, the Coroners noted the death rate among individuals 60 and older has remained "relatively stable" since 2021.
