BCHL to Oversee Island Hockey League Under Renewed Deal

The expanded deal gives the BCHL office control of VIJHL operations in 2027-28 as the leagues deepen their affiliate development system.

  • The British Columbia Hockey League and Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League extended their partnership, with the BCHL office set to oversee VIJHL operations beginning with the 2027-28 season.
  • Following the VIJHL's independence ahead of the 2024-25 season, the leagues established a three-year partnership, positioning the Island league as a development system for BCHL prospects.
  • The percentage of Canadian-born players in the VIJHL fell from 93.3 per cent in 2023-24 to 80.9 per cent last season; several VIJHL and BCHL clubs share ownership, including the Trail Smoke Eaters and Peninsula Panthers.
  • VIJHL board chair Shawn Vincent said, "The past two seasons have been a period of exponential growth for the league and its owners and we are grateful for the BCHL." BCHL commissioner Steven Cocker expressed satisfaction with the collaboration.
  • The VIJHL season begins Sept. 4, followed by the BCHL on Sept. 18, as this agreement serves as a step forward for the athlete-first independent development system.
