Caltrops Found in Dirt on Popular Comox Valley Trail
Police say the metal spikes can puncture tires and injure people and pets, and they are investigating reports on trails and roads.
On June 16, Comox Valley RCMP and Comox Valley Search and Rescue issued safety warnings after metal caltrops were discovered on local trails and residential streets in the region.
Mountain biker Eric Roy discovered the devices on June 14 near Stotan Falls Fish Passage Area after 14 years biking Comox Valley trails; Roy described the placement as a deliberate trap.
Caltrops feature spikes pointing upward regardless of impact, threatening serious injury. A motorist reported two flat tires on May 20 after driving through Lake Trail Road and Marsden Road area.
Investigating the incidents, Comox Valley RCMP asks residents to report suspicious activity and discarded spike devices. The public can contact the department at 250-338-1321 with information.
CVSAR advises trail users to maintain extra caution around corners and narrow sections, monitoring ground surfaces while biking, hiking, or running to avoid these hazardous metal objects.
