Eby Announces B.C. Grocery 'Price Guard' During Kelowna Visit
The NDP said it would cap profit margins on six staples and use clear per-unit pricing to curb shrinkflation and support smaller grocers.
On Friday, Premier David Eby announced a "price guard" in Kelowna to cap grocery profit margins on essentials, while Interim Conservative leader Lorne Doerkson unveiled a $500 million wildfire response plan the same day.
Eby's proposed "price guard" aims to cap retail profit margins on milk, eggs, cheese, butter, and poultry, extending protections already used for farmers through marketing boards to grocery consumers.
Doerkson's $500 million wildfire plan includes purchasing Crown-owned water bombers and artificial intelligence technology, which he argues will reduce escalating emergency suppression costs and ultimately save taxpayers money.
Kelowna-Mission candidate Gavin Dew criticized Eby's affordability record, citing his failure to deliver a $1,000 grocery rebate promised in 2024 and questioning management of the $13.8 billion deficit.
Doerkson made his announcement near a property destroyed last month during the Bald Range wildfire, which burned more than 80 homes. The election campaign continues ahead of the October 24 vote.
