New Bid Could Keep Vancouver Whitecaps in B.C., Minister Says
The bid includes a privately financed soccer-specific stadium in Las Vegas as MLS reviews the Whitecaps’ future, while fans and officials push to keep the club in B.C.
British Columbia Jobs Minister Ravi Kahlon confirmed Wednesday that a local group has approached the provincial government with a bid to purchase the Vancouver Whitecaps, aiming to keep the Major League Soccer team in Vancouver.
Ownership has sought to sell the club since 2024 amid revenue challenges at the home stadium, while an investor group led by billionaire businessman Grant Gustavson submitted a formal bid last week to relocate the team to Las Vegas.
Whitecaps CEO Axel Schuster stated the club requires a "successor" capable of generating more revenue, as the team continues to hover near the top of the league's standings with an 8-1-1 record.
Kahlon described the local bid as a "positive development" for fans, noting the organizers are conducting "due diligence" and will share more information soon about a plan to keep the team in Vancouver.
Commissioner Don Garber met with local leadership last week during the 76th FIFA Congress, and league executives plan to return to Vancouver in the coming weeks for additional discussions regarding the club's future.
