Totti Turns Down Italy and Roma to Join Basketball Club
Totti said the new role came after he felt valued in the project, as Rome prepares to field two top-flight basketball clubs.
- On Tuesday, Francesco Totti joined new Roman basketball team Maxima as an adviser, turning down roles with the rebuilding Azzurri and his former football club, Roma.
- Maxima president Paul Matiasic convinced Totti to join in just 10 minutes. Totti played 785 games over 25 seasons for Roma, scoring 307 goals and leading them to the 2001 Scudetto.
- "It's a bit strange to find myself here," Totti said, explaining he chose basketball because the team made him feel valued and will turn 50 on September 27.
- With Maxima joining Roma SPQR, Rome will feature two top-flight basketball teams this season. Roma SPQR is part-owned by Slovenian point guard Luka Doncic, who plays for the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA.
- Both Maxima and Roma SPQR are vying for an NBA franchise as part of the league's European expansion. Rome is one of 12 cities targeted by the NBA for the European league's launch in 2027.
