'Barbie 2' May Happen After All as Skydance Targets Sequel
Skydance is trying to secure the original creative team as a December rights deadline looms for the $1.4 billion franchise.
As Warner Bros. prepares to join Skydance, efforts to produce a Barbie 2 sequel are gathering pace, with the company planning to utilize the Warner Bros. catalog to revive the stalled project.
Previous discussions stalled as Warner Bros. failed to reach compensation agreements with director Greta Gerwig and stars Margot Robbie, Noah Baumbach, and Ryan Gosling, whose original contracts did not require a sequel return.
Sources told Variety that work is underway to secure a follow-up, bolstered by Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz now serving as co-CEO alongside Dana Goldberg and Josh Greenstein overseeing film executives.
Despite renewed activity, the studio has not officially approved a sequel, while key players remain occupied; Ryan Gosling booked Ghost Rider for Marvel and Greta Gerwig is directing Chronicles of Narnia for Netflix.
Warner Bros. must reach a conclusion by December or the rights to the $1.4 billion 2023 hit will revert to Mattel, ending the billion-dollar franchise if negotiations fail.
